Download WhatsApp for iPad

WhatsApp, the free instant messenger application that has become a favorite among iPhone users and worldwide, has historically had some problems when it came to downloading it to an iPad or iPod Touch. This is probably because WhatsApp accounts have always been attached to a mobile phone number, which iPads don’t have. We want you to be able to enjoy the same benefits of WhatsApp messages, picture messages, videos, audio messages, and voice calling on your iPad or iPod Touch, so we’ve compiled a few different strategies to try, from easiest to hardest. Hopefully, one of them will work for you.

Download WhatsApp for iPad from iTunes App Store

The first thing to try would be to use your iPad to go to the App Store, search for “WhatsApp” and see if you are able to download it. If it doesn’t give you the option to download, or says your device is not supported, proceed to the next step.

Download WhatsApp on your Mac from iTunes

If you do a quick Google search for “whatsapp for iPad”, the following link from the iTunes store appears:

The preview text in Google says that you can Download WhatsApp Messenger and enjoy it on your iPhone, iPad or iPod Touch, which, to me, implies that you should have been able to download it to your iPad directly from iTunes. If you weren’t able to, the next thing to try would be to download WhatsApp from iTunes to your Mac, and then transfer it to your iPad by locating the .ipa file in your Mac’s iTunes Media folders.

Download WhatsApp on iPad with a File Manager App

If that doesn’t work, you might need to download a different file manager app, like iFunbox. Find the same .ipa file as before, but this time drag it onto your desktop. Connect your iPad to your Mac, install iFunbox to your Mac, and start the program. In iFunbox, click “Install App”, and click on the WhatsApp .ipa file that we put on the desktop, and the file will be installed on your iPad. If you open it, and it works, you’re done! If not, proceed to the next step, which requires an iPhone.

Copy Registration Information from iPhone to iPad

Do a fresh install of WhatsApp on your iPhone, even if you’ve downloaded it previously. Delete it and re-install it if necessary. When you set it up, register the phone number that you want linked to your iPad, which you’ll have to verify with a code sent to that number. Unplug your iPad from your Mac and plug the iPhone into the Mac. Go back to iFunbox and under iPhone, click “User Applications”, double click the WhatsApp icon, and copy both the “Library” and “Documents” folders to the desktop. Now, unplug the iPhone and plug the iPad into your Mac, and under iPad, double click the WhatsApp icon just like you did before. Now, replace the existing “Library” and “Documents” folders with the ones we copied from the iPhone.

If all of that didn’t work, you might have to jailbreak your iPad to install the .ipa file.

If you don’t want to jailbreak your iPad or iPod Touch for whatever reason, and none of the above worked for you, your only chance is to hope that WhatsApp Web comes out with a version compatible with the browsers on iPad.

WhatsApp Web for iPad?

Download WhatsApp for iPad

Right now, the Mac version of WhatsApp, WhatsApp Web, is only compatible with OS X, so it doesn’t work on iPad. If you try to do it on the iPad, it will tell you that you need to download Chrome to make it work, but it actually won’t recognize that you’re using Chrome so long as you’re on the iPad. WhatsApp claims that there are platform limitations which are preventing it from developing a WhatsApp Web for iPad. We hope they figure out a solution to this problem, because, in the case that none of the above strategies put a working version of WhatsApp onto your iPad, a compatible version of WhatsApp Web is our last hope.
